The manager, Mr. Jayathilaka stands on the floor of what was an officebuilding in the boatyard, when the tsunami hit on the morning of Boxing Day, December 26th, 2004.

The boatyard was destroyed and boats, including 7 foreign yachts, buildings, tools and materials scattered all over the area.

Luckily it was a holiday and the staff was not at work, so no one were injured or killed in the boatyard.

Boats were found in other parts of the city, one katamaran being washed past the post office and through the city center to the grounds of the hospital 500 m further north.

Shortly after the tsunami an interim workshop was set up with the help of the Belgian Army, and production was started on a series of fishing boats to replace the large amount of boats lost along the coast.

A total of 68 open day fishing boats, and 20 29'9 fishing boats have been built.

This programme is now soon to be finished, and reconstruction of facilites on the shore are to begin.
